Purple Mattress Review

Unlike traditional foam or hybrid mattresses, Purple’s unique grid-shaped comfort layer offers a responsive sleep experience without overheating. It’s ideal for back and side sleepers of all body weights.

Purple, like other bed-in a-box brands also ships its mattress compressed inside a cylinder. It takes several hours for the mattress decompress.

Responsive Support

Purple’s main differentiator is the Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid, which covers the top layer. This gel-like material is temperature-regulating, breathable, and has a soft, squishy feel. It is also molded in a comfort grid, which increases airflow and helps to breathe the mattress.

This layer is completed by a 3.5″ transition layer of 1.8lb density foam that provides additional pressure relief and comfort. Finally, the base layer is made of 4” of 2 lb density poly foam to add durability and structure to the mattress.

Purple uses only materials that are CertiPUR US certified and free of harmful chemicals. Most of their foams are also CleanAir GOLD rated, which is another way they promote healthy sleep. Like most beds with foam, Purple has a bit of a new mattress smell that dissipates within a day or two, especially in a well-ventilated room.

Motion Isolation

The Purple Mattress scores 7.5/10 on our motion isolation test, which means it limits the transfer of movement between sleepers. This is an excellent score for couples sharing a bed.

The top layer is a patented hyperelastic polymer mesh called Smart Comfort Grid. This unique material buckles underneath heavier areas to provide support and create the floating sensation that many people love.

Next comes a 3.5-inch transition layer of soft, responsive foam that helps prevent sinkage. Then there’s a 4-inch base layer of medium-firm, high-density polyfoam that supports the rest of the mattress.

The Purple Mattress is made from materials that are CertiPUR US certified. This means they meet standards of low emissions and chemicals. The Purple Mattress emits an initial “new-mattress” smell, but it will disappear within a few days when opened in a well ventilated room.

Comfort Levels

The Purple Mattress is an excellent choice for most sleepers. The top layer is made of patented hyper elastic polymer, which provides excellent pressure relief. There is also a transition layer of 3.5 inches of fast-responding poly foam that keeps the top layer from sinking too much.

The base layer of 4 inches of high-density poly foam provides solid support. Purple mattresses can be a bit too soft if you are heavier than average. The same goes for stomach sleepers. Firmer mattresses are better for them to avoid developing painful pressure points in the lower back and neck.

This mattress is also excellent at reducing motion. Even when we move around a lot as a couple, the other person barely feels it. This is especially beneficial for couples with differing sleeping habits. Purple mattresses regulate temperature well. The GelFlex Grid and breathable cover allow for airflow so you shouldn’t have too much heat retention.

The Right to Rent

Purple offers a 10-year warranty on their mattresses. The warranty is separate from the sleep trial and return policy. The company requires a 21-night break in period to allow your body to adjust to the mattress. After this, returns are fair game.

The warranty covers only structural and construction defects as well as indentations of one inch or greater depth. It excludes localized changes to firmness, wear, and any changes that may occur in comfort preferences over time. It also doesn’t cover any damage caused by misuse or neglect.

Purple mattresses ship free in a box and are easy to set up. There may be a slight off-gassing smell right after you remove the plastic wrap, but this should dissipate within a few hours in a well-ventilated room. The mattress is heavy, however, so lifting and moving it will require some muscle. You’ll also need a bed frame or foundation to support it.
