Purple Mattress Review

Unlike traditional foam or hybrid mattresses, Purple’s unique grid-shaped comfort layer offers a responsive sleep experience without overheating. It’s ideal for back and side sleepers of all body weights.

Like other bed-in-a-box brands, Purple ships its mattress compressed in a cylinder case. It takes a few hours for the mattress to fully decompress.

Responsive Support

Purple’s main differentiator is the Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid, which covers the top layer. This gel-like material is temperature-regulating, breathable, and has a soft, squishy feel. It is also molded in a comfort grid, which increases airflow and helps to breathe the mattress.

This layer is completed by a 3.5″ transition layer of 1.8lb density foam that provides additional pressure relief and comfort. Finally, the base layer is made of 4” of 2 lb density poly foam to add durability and structure to the mattress.

Purple uses only materials that are CertiPUR US certified and free of harmful chemicals. The majority of their foams also have CleanAir GOLD ratings, which is yet another way that Purple promotes healthy sleep. Purple mattresses have a slight new mattress smell, but this goes away within a few days, especially if you are in a well ventilated room.

Motion Isolation

The Purple Mattress scored 7.5/10 in our motion isolation test. This means that it limits the transference of movement between sleepers. This is a great score for couples who share a bed.

The top layer is a patented hyperelastic polymer mesh called Smart Comfort Grid. This unique material buckles underneath heavier areas to provide support and create the floating sensation that many people love.

The next layer is a 3.5 inch transition layer of soft foam that prevents sinkage. Then there’s a 4-inch base layer of medium-firm, high-density polyfoam that supports the rest of the mattress.

All of the materials in the Purple Mattress are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they meet standards for low emissions and chemicals. Like most mattresses, the Purple Mattress does emit an initial “new mattress” odor, but this will dissipate within a few hours when opened in a well-ventilated room.

Comfort Levels

The Purple Mattress is an excellent choice for most sleepers. The top layer is made of patented hyper elastic polymer, which provides excellent pressure relief. A transition layer of 3.5-inches of fast-responding foam poly keeps the top layer from sinking.

The base layer, which is 4 inches of high density poly foam, provides a solid foundation. Purple mattresses can be a bit too soft if you are heavier than average. The same is true for stomach sleepers. Firmer mattresses are better for them to avoid developing painful pressure points in the lower back and neck.

Motion isolation is also very good on this mattress. Even when one of us moves around a lot, the other sleeper barely feels it. This is especially beneficial for couples with differing sleeping habits. Purple mattresses regulate temperature well. The GelFlex Grid and breathable cover allow for airflow so you shouldn’t have too much heat retention.

The Right to Rent

Purple offers a 10-year warranty on their mattresses. It is offered separately from their sleep trial and return policy. The company does require a 21-night break-in period to let your body adjust to the mattress. After this, returns are fair game.

The warranty only covers structural and construction defects, as well as indentations that are one inch or more deep. It excludes localized changes to firmness, wear, and any changes that may occur in comfort preferences over time. It does not cover damage caused by abuse or neglect.

Purple mattresses ship free in a box and are easy to set up. There may be a slight off-gassing smell right after you remove the plastic wrap, but this should dissipate within a few hours in a well-ventilated room. The mattress is heavy, however, so lifting and moving it will require some muscle. You’ll also need a bed frame or foundation to support it.
