Purple Mattress Review
Unlike traditional foam or hybrid mattresses, Purple’s unique grid-shaped comfort layer offers a responsive sleep experience without overheating. It’s ideal for back and side sleepers of all body weights.
Like other bed-in-a-box brands, Purple ships its mattress compressed in a cylinder case. It takes several hours for the mattress decompress.
Responsive Support
Purple’s main differentiator is the Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid, which covers the top layer. This gel-like material is temperature-regulating, breathable, and has a soft, squishy feel. It is also molded in a comfort grid, which increases airflow and helps to breathe the mattress.
This layer is complemented by a 3.5” transition layer of 1.8 lb density foam to provide additional pressure relief and support. Finally, the base layer is made of 4” of 2 lb density poly foam to add durability and structure to the mattress.
All of the materials used by Purple are CertiPUR-US certified and free from harmful chemicals. The majority of their foams also have CleanAir GOLD ratings, which is yet another way that Purple promotes healthy sleep. Like most beds with foam, Purple has a bit of a new mattress smell that dissipates within a day or two, especially in a well-ventilated room.
Motion Isolation
The Purple Mattress scored 7.5/10 in our motion isolation test. This means that it limits the transference of movement between sleepers. This is an excellent score for couples sharing a bed.
The top layer is a patented hyperelastic polymer mesh called Smart Comfort Grid. This unique material buckles under heavier areas to offer support and create a floating sensation that many sleepers love.
The next layer is a 3.5 inch transition layer of soft foam that prevents sinkage. The base layer is a 4-inch medium-firm, high density polyfoam. This supports the rest the mattress.
All of the materials in the Purple Mattress are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they meet standards for low emissions and chemicals. The Purple Mattress emits an initial “new-mattress” smell, but it will disappear within a few days when opened in a well ventilated room.
Comfort Levels
The Purple Mattress is an excellent choice for most sleepers. The top layer of patented hyper-elastic polymer offers some great pressure relief. A transition layer of 3.5-inches of fast-responding foam poly keeps the top layer from sinking.
The base layer of 4 inches of high-density poly foam provides solid support. If you’re heavier than average, however, you might find the Purple mattress a little too soft for your liking. The same is true for stomach sleepers. Firmer mattresses are better for them to avoid developing painful pressure points in the lower back and neck.
This mattress is also excellent at reducing motion. Even when one of us moves around a lot, the other sleeper barely feels it. This is particularly beneficial for couples who have different sleeping habits. The Purple mattress also regulates temperature well. The GelFlex Grid and breathable cover allow for airflow so you shouldn’t have too much heat retention.
The Right to Rent
Purple offers a 10-year warranty on their mattresses. The warranty is separate from the sleep trial and return policy. The company does require a 21-night break-in period to let your body adjust to the mattress. After this, returns are fair game.
The warranty only covers structural and construction defects, as well as indentations that are one inch or more deep. It excludes localized changes in firmness, wear and tear, and any changes in comfort preference that occur over time. It does not cover damage caused by abuse or neglect.
Purple mattresses ship free in a box and are easy to set up. There may be a slight off-gassing smell right after you remove the plastic wrap, but this should dissipate within a few hours in a well-ventilated room. It is heavy and will take some strength to lift it. You’ll also need a bed frame or foundation to support it.
